Conquering Self-Care Like A Boss

Want to know a secret? Ok, maybe two secrets.

Society plays tricks with our brains. When you play along (which is easy to do), you end up thinking that being “busy” is what we’re supposed to be, that it’s a good thing. (Even a status symbol!) But guess what? We are human BEINGS, not human DOINGS.

In fact, according to the NY Times, you’re probably not even doing it on purpose. “At some point, the standard answer to “how are you” changed from “fine, thanks” to “busy!” And as a result, we’ve developed a mindset that pushing ourselves to the point of exhaustion is normal. Until we crash and burn.

By not allowing ourselves to simply “be,” we can never truly know who we are. If you’re running around listening to everyone else and taking care of everyone else, but you ignore your own needs and your own voice, chances are you are running on empty — stuck in The Busy Trap — and not really accomplishing very much.  Worse, you are risking your own well-being.

I know this drill so well, because it was me. But I conquered my “chaotic, crazy-busy” whirlwind of a life with a simple  secret weapon: SELF-CARE.

People often wonder why self-care is so important, and mistakenly think they will come off as a slacker. But it couldn’t be farther from the truth, and is a vital step to taking charge of your own wellbeing.

First, for me, it starts with GRATITUDE and BREATHING! Literally, just taking a moment to breathe deeply, and think about 3 things I’m grateful for tricks my brain, and slows down life, allowing me to be present, and in control. Things are back in focus.

Next, I love playing the self-care game way more than the crazy-busy game. So depending on what’s going on, I may grab a cup of herbal tea and light some candles, or feel the need to soak for 20 minutes in a warm bath at the end of the day.  Or! I may even start my day with an energizing bath if I feel more fatigued than usual. Self-care is also time spent with friends, or walking in the park. It’s whatever nourishes you — mentally, physically, spiritually, and emotionally. Lately, I love flipping through magazines — there is something about the thick, beautiful Fall issues and the inspiration in them that is fun.  For sure, I’m a fan of anything that requires me to slow down, and take a digital detox.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a mom with several creative passions and businesses, someone who literally lives outside of their comfort zone every single day.  Like everyone, I have hard days. But the difference now is I don’t let any of it define me, or control me. And I want to make it easier for people everywhere to experience how good, fun and healthy self-care can be.

Let’s face it. Even on the best days, we all experience mental exhaustion because of the chaotic nature of what’s going on in the world.
