Everyday wellness. One thing we can all probably agree on is that everyone wants to be well. After all, being well means that life is in full color, and anything is possible, right?
The challenge is how to achieve your optimal well SELF. At times, this concept can seem overwhelming because we let ourselves, perhaps unintentionally, get overwhelmed. It can become a vicious cycle leaving you depleted, questioning your own self-worth, lapsing into bad habits and definitely not feeling your best. Do you struggle with how to break this cycle? Or wonder, how can it be done easily and quickly so you can happily get on with your life? Before we can answer these questions, let’s look at what wellness actually means.
The definition of wellness, long used by the National Wellness Institute, is consistent with the following tenets which encompass a shared agreement among health and wellness leaders around the world:
Wellness is a conscious, self-directed and evolving process of achieving full potential;
Wellness is multidimensional and holistic, encompassing lifestyle, mental and spiritual well-being, and the environment;
Wellness is positive and affirming.
Therefore, NWI states: Wellness is an active process through which people become aware of, and make choices toward, a more successful existence.

In fact, Dr. Bill Hettler, co-founder of the National Wellness Institute, is credited for developing the interdependent holistic model, The Six Dimensions of Wellness, and when applied “a person becomes aware of the interconnectedness of each dimension and how they contribute to healthy living.”
This holistic model explains:
How a person contributes to their environment and community, and how to build better living spaces and social networks;
The enrichment of life through work, and its interconnectedness to living and playing;
The development of belief systems, values, and creating a world-view;
The benefits of regular physical activity, healthy eating habits, strength and vitality as well as personal responsibility, self-care and when to seek medical attention;
Self-esteem, self-control, and determination as a sense of direction;
Creative and stimulating mental activities, and sharing your gifts with others.
I found this model to be helpful as a way for me to look at and understand my own wellness journey. But even more profound, it’s even more clarifying for me in terms of our mission for Salty Bath. At the core of this mission is a passion to help people have what they need to practice self-care and live to their full-potential. It developed out of my own life experiences and learning first-hand how to break the cycle of feeling depleted and overwhelmed. I needed to stop getting in my own way — but I also wanted something that didn’t eat up a lot of time and money.
Self-care became my secret weapon for winning at life… and through that journey came a discovery of not only my optimal wellness, but a much deeper connection with myself and a “successful existence” — something I had never experienced before. The word existence is key here and it’s dimensional. This process, as we can see, is all about the choices we make toward a holistic awareness around healthy living. It’s so much more than diet and exercise, and financial success or well-being. But you open yourself up to experience more abundance and joy in every aspect of your life when you are operating with this type of awareness and connectedness – that is for sure.
So here is something to think about. By being more intentional, you get out of any rut you find yourself in. You can actually harness your own energy in a more positive way as it relates to any aspect of your life.
This was a profound discovery for me, and it happened with the simple act of Intentional Bathing. My showers were transactional and based on good hygiene. But my baths were intentional mindful moments with myself. Often, I went into the tub feeling stressed, anxious, tired, tense and sore. So I started concocting a transition ritual for myself, one that took me out of my head and into stillness. It was a full sensory experience: the hot water with mineral salts (touch); essential oils (smell), candles and healing crystals (sight); meditative music (sound/hearing); and warm tea (taste). I also put my hands over my heart and felt my own heartbeat. I focused on the beats as I breathed deeply and slowly. After these 20 minute sessions with myself, I was a different person from the one who entered the tub. I was calmer. The stress and tension were gone. My body had softened, and I was relaxed without pain. My energy was more grounded, and my head was clear. I imagine it’s the closest thing to feeling like a marshmallow!
Being connected to myself this way enabled me to be of much better service to everyone around me, but it also made me realize that it just takes the smallest of actions to effect change for the better. One that has a rippling effect, sending higher, positive vibrations out into the world. It inspired to me to figure out how to help more people this way.

It can be hard to maintain a joyful mindset. Even if you have the cheeriest disposition, are thankful and joyful in the grand scheme of things, and commit to taking steps to find joy as a matter of everyday habit, all you need to do is go online where gloom, doom and negativity will flood your screen. Current events are volatile. Local communities are struggling. Global affairs are tenuous. At times, it’s hard to know what to believe or to be blunt: what the hell is going on.
Talk about a buzzkill for feeling joyful!
Unplugging helps. Another BIG PLUS is decluttering anything in your life that does not bring you joy. (That is another topic, entirely!) But recently, I personally wanted something to stretch me even more. So, I had to ratchet up my mindful game with some new tools — ways to not only re-focus and maintain joy, but also to help keep me centered.
I have my habitual toolkit: using my go-to essential oils, such as Cedarwood, Sandalwood and Frankincense, surrounding myself in nature whenever possible, and of course, taking warm, salty baths to relax me and help me unwind. But this time I wanted something old school to add to the mix. I like journaling, which packs many surprising benefits – it’s a great way to evoke mindfulness, it’s helpful to stay present and even helps in the healing process. But I wanted something a bit more specific, rather than blank pages for me to fill up. Something that could function as a kind of “assistant” for my mindfulness journey. And there it was, spotted on a shelf in a NYC store…

This incredible journal is the perfect tool to extend the centering and mindful message of our our Salty Bath mantra cards. A nifty, digest-sized journal, “Do One Thing Every Day That Centers You” helps guide me on my path for creating a centered, joyful life. This dynamo is filled with inspiration from poets, writers, entrepreneurs, athletes, scientists, authors, philosophers, presidents, saints and gurus and coupled with loads of prompts and activities to “help you grow in heart, mind, body and spirit.” This felt like my partner in crime, and I was happy to read the following intro:
The word “centers” in its use today, and even in the title of this book, is a slippery one, often defined by other intangible terms — mindfulness, gratitude, wholeness, groundedness, focus, flow, serenity, self-knowledge, and self-acceptance. The best definition, however, comes not from the heady realm of ideas, but from the hands-on-world of craft. Every potter knows how difficult it is to learn how to center clay on wheel. It takes hours and hours and days and days of dedication and practice, until your hands “know” the clay well enough to center it. If you move ahead too early, your pot will be unsteady, fragile, and unattractive. But once you find the center, your pot – whatever your personal desire for it – will be balanced, secure and beautiful.
The imagery this conjured up really resonated for me.
For most people, creating a centered life, like molding that pot, requires dedication and practice.
Indeed, this handy little book stated its goal:
You will be urged to expand your knowledge and to edge it toward wisdom. You will appreciate the places, people, and experiences that give peace to to your body and meaning to your life.
As someone who not only considers herself lucky, I am also deeply grateful for the life I have (and all the people and experiences it encompasses). At the same time, the idea of taking this foundation and expanding it, deepening it, excites me. As the English poet, Walter de la Mare said “Go far; come near; You still must be the center of your own small mystery,” we can all use a bit of inspiration and prompting when we are dedicated to being mindful… or going inward. It’s so easy to fall off our center in that process.
I love that the pages in the journal are unnumbered, it’s fun to flip to a page and land on something meant to stretch you, calm you, focus you, etc. and then you can always refer back to them when you need to. Like this little gem, pictured below.

Ever have a day where, despite best intentions and plans, you feel like you are just having to react to less than ideal situations, or stuff pops up where you feel like a ship lost at sea? This is especially true for working moms and entrepreneurs who struggle with work/life balance, and for whom finding your center can feel more challenging than not. Daily life is hectic, and it’s often hard to find little opportunities to catch our breath, slow down, and get more introspective. This mindful journal is one way to help solve for that.
I also think we are way more resilient and creative than we give ourselves credit for. Having a sound body, and serene mind takes effort, sure, but exercises like this remind us that it’s also ok to recognize — celebrate, even — those times when we defy “bad weather.” It also allows us to not only feel a sense of accomplishment – but let’s face it, gives us permission to let off some much-needed steam too. That’s just one page, the book is chock-full of awesome stuff that will expand your awareness.
If, like me, your life is full and busy, you know all too well how easy it is to lose your center. Sometimes I think to myself, “why do I take on so much…I must be crazy!” But when I think about what things I should cut back on — I have 2 businesses, I’m an actress, and Mom of 3, plus 2 furry pups — I don’t want to give up anything, and especially relish my time with my kids, husband, pets and home life.
Recently, I had a conversation with someone while attending Accepted Students Day at The New School / Parsons School of Design where my son will go this Fall. Turns out, in fact, that my son is not only attending my alma mater, but has also chosen the same major I studied: Strategic Design and Management. Sitting there that day in one of the breakout sessions, I was overcome with the most surreal joy I have experienced — reminiscing about my student days there 28 years ago was pretty intense coupled with my son’s journey ahead of him. But the program director mentioned the word “multi-passionate” as a word to describe the students in the program. It was that moment that centered me in a profound way…when I realized – hey! that is me! – and also why being centered can also feel so fleeting when you are passionate about, and equally engaged in, so many things. Even with the love and support I have, there are days that make me want to pull my hair out.
As the mindful journal mentioned, it’s a slippery slope. Even the most positive, creative, successful people need guidance, tricks and tools to SLOW DOWN, and stay on the elusive path to a centered life. Getting grounded and being mindful in this crazy world is powerful and it’s healthy. So, take time to honor that. Take time (even 5 to 10 minutes will work wonders) to do one thing to center you today. If that seems like a confusing, but intriguing, concept and you don’t know where to start, use the example in the photo above… or pick up the same journal I did. This Ralph Waldo Emerson quote from the book may also help inspire you to tune in to that inner voice. “Trust to that prompting within you.” Here’s to defying bad weather … and finding joy…together!

Canarium Luzonicum Tree, grows in the tropical forest in Philippines
I have a confession to make. I am head-over-heels in love with Elemi Essential Oil. Its scent is garden-fresh with top notes of lemon and sweet cooling base notes that uplift and rejuvenate, and its powers have me spellbound.

Elemi Essential oil comes from the Canarium Luzonicum Tree found in the tropical forests of the Philippines and its neighboring nations. It is in the same botanical family as frankincense and myrrh. We can thank Albert Einstein for helping us to understand the general theory of relativity, and the relationship between matter and energy. In simple terms, you and everything around you, is made up of energy. That means all living objects – like humans – and all inanimate objects, such as crystals, all have a vibration.
When we interact with crystals, we are exchanging energy and affecting our own vibration. Crystals are a powerful way to bring about intentional change into our own lives, particularly since our personal “vibe” is easily influenced and can vary based on our emotions, our personal situations, what we eat, how we spend our time, our work/career, our family, you name it. Think about it, since we are all pure energy, on our own frequency, and emitting our own energy, our unique vibration is an important factor to how we all relate with one another. If we “vibe” with someone, it generally means we like them or feel connected to them or their energy. We are constantly exchanging energy with each other, and I for one, have experienced both sides of the coin. For example, being around a person with a “low vibe” feels like an energy suck, and being around someone with a high vibe feels exciting and positive. Interestingly, there is a whole “high vibe” lifestyle where you can find everything from food (generally in its raw form) to clothing dedicated to generating the highest positive vibes! And according to some, you can even incorporate crystals into your beauty routine to “pamper, balance and beautify.”
The vibration of crystals is constant, and in many cases, they operate on at very high levels. Working with crystals as a healing technique dates back over 6,000 years ago, long before Einstein was born. Many people today use crystals to help focus a mindful practice, as well as help eliminate negativity and radiate more positivity. In essence, working with crystals helps us to raise our vibe higher, focus our mind, connect to our inner world, and bring about a desired change.
Explore your inner Shaman! Healing crystals can be a great addition to your self-care routine (you have a self-care routine, right?). Because crystals are beautiful and each have their own unique characteristics and properties, they are also easy and fun to work with. You can carry them around with you, display them on your desk or in your home, some people like to create special spiritual altars, the possibilities are endless. I like to use them for visualization exercises, as well as to feng shui my home, and bath. The key, however, is activating, or programming the crystal to work with your energy.
Here’s how to do program your crystal:
Clear your stone. I like to do a simple sea salt bath for the stone. Sea salt and water are amazing at ridding the stone of unwanted energy. Simply fill a bowl with water, add some sea salt, add some essential oils for an enhanced cleanse, and let it sit overnight. (Note, if you have a “crumbly” type of stone, don’t use this method. Instead, you can simply put your stone in the sunlight for a day.)
Dedicate your stone. Next, you will want to put your intention into the stone, or dedicate it. This is how you connect with your stone and its powerful, vibrational energy. Typically, you will want to hold the crystal in your left hand (your receiving side). Say aloud:
“I dedicate this stone to the highest good. I ask that it be received in love and light.”
Next is the programming part. Focus on your intention — protection, love, guidance, heal an illness, etc. — and state that intention by saying “I dedicate this stone for (your purpose).”
I love carrying them with me on a spa trip, or keeping my crystals close to me at home and lighting a candle alongside a newly programmed stone for extra mindfulness. Each time there is a New Moon, I create a stone cleansing ritual and re-program them as a way to bring into my life all the positive new energy and flush out any negativity that may be lingering. I also love adding crystals and candles to my bath — it’s an amazing way to wash with energy and intent — especially crystals like Citrine (for prosperity, abundance and creativity) and Rose Quartz (which promotes joy and unconditional love). For a truly holistic approach, I love to add a mantra or meditation into the mix. These rituals are a great way to live more consciously, simply by tapping into the vibrational power of crystals.
