Everyday wellness. One thing we can all probably agree on is that everyone wants to be well. After all, being well means that life is in full color, and anything is possible, right?

The challenge is how to achieve your optimal well SELF.  At times, this concept can seem overwhelming because we let ourselves, perhaps unintentionally, get overwhelmed. It can become a vicious cycle leaving you depleted, questioning your own self-worth, lapsing into bad habits and definitely not feeling your best.  Do you struggle with how to break this cycle? Or wonder, how can it be done easily and quickly so you can happily get on with your life? Before we can answer these questions, let’s look at what wellness actually means.

The definition of wellness, long used by the National Wellness Institute, is consistent with the following tenets which encompass a shared agreement among health and wellness leaders around the world:

  • Wellness is a conscious, self-directed and evolving process of achieving full potential;
  • Wellness is multidimensional and holistic, encompassing lifestyle, mental and spiritual well-being, and the environment;
  • Wellness is positive and affirming.

Therefore, NWI states: Wellness is an active process through which people become aware of, and make choices toward, a more successful existence.

In fact, Dr. Bill Hettler, co-founder of the National Wellness Institute, is credited for developing the interdependent holistic model, The Six Dimensions of Wellness, and when applied “a person becomes aware of the interconnectedness of each dimension and how they contribute to healthy living.”

This holistic model explains:

  • How a person contributes to their environment and community, and how to build better living spaces and social networks;
  • The enrichment of life through work, and its interconnectedness to living and playing;
  • The development of belief systems, values, and creating a world-view;
  • The benefits of regular physical activity, healthy eating habits, strength and vitality as well as personal responsibility, self-care and when to seek medical attention;
  • Self-esteem, self-control, and determination as a sense of direction;
  • Creative and stimulating mental activities, and sharing your gifts with others.

I found this model to be helpful as a way for me to look at and understand my own wellness journey. But even more profound, it’s even more clarifying for me in terms of our mission for Salty Bath. At the core of this mission is a passion to help people have what they need to practice self-care and live to their full-potential. It developed out of my own life experiences and learning first-hand how to break the cycle of feeling depleted and overwhelmed. I needed to stop getting in my own way — but I also wanted something that didn’t eat up a lot of time and money.

Self-care became my secret weapon for winning at life… and through that journey came a discovery of not only my optimal wellness, but a much deeper connection with myself and a “successful existence” — something I had never experienced before. The word existence is key here and it’s dimensional. This process, as we can see, is all about the choices we make toward a holistic awareness around healthy living. It’s so much more than diet and exercise, and financial success or well-being. But you open yourself up to experience more abundance and joy in every aspect of your life when you are operating with this type of awareness and connectedness – that is for sure.

So here is something to think about. By being more intentional, you get out of any rut you find yourself in.  You can actually harness your own energy in a more positive way as it relates to any aspect of your life.

This was a profound discovery for me, and it happened with the simple act of Intentional Bathing.  My showers were transactional and based on good hygiene. But my baths were intentional mindful moments with myself.  Often, I went into the tub feeling stressed, anxious, tired, tense and sore. So I started concocting a transition ritual for myself, one that took me out of my head and into stillness.  It was a full sensory experience: the hot water with mineral salts (touch); essential oils (smell), candles and healing crystals (sight); meditative music (sound/hearing); and warm tea (taste). I also put my hands over my heart and felt my own heartbeat. I focused on the beats as I breathed deeply and slowly. After these 20 minute sessions with myself, I was a different person from the one who entered the tub. I was calmer. The stress and tension were gone. My body had softened, and I was relaxed without pain. My energy was more grounded, and my head was clear. I imagine it’s the closest thing to feeling like a marshmallow!

Being connected to myself this way enabled me to be of much better service to everyone around me, but it also made me realize that it just takes the smallest of actions to effect change for the better. One that has a rippling effect, sending higher, positive vibrations out into the world. It inspired to me to figure out how to help more people this way.

Turn off your devices, and make sure your bed and room are cozy. Check your thermostat. Best sleeping conditions are when the room is on the cool side, around 68 degrees. Also, most people have a better time getting proper rest when they stick to a schedule of 8 solid hours, such as 11pm to 7am. That way you can train your body’s internal clock. In the morning, wake up, stretch and drink a glass of water with lemon.
