Amethyst, known for its healing powers, has the ability to attract spiritual energies and to calm restless thoughts. Pendulums and crystals can absorb energy from their surroundings.  It’s important to cleanse and recharge them when you first get them, or if you have worked with them for awhile.  The best and most complete way to get rid of negative energies is to use the 4 elements of nature. Here are some ideas:

EARTH: Bury your stone pendulum in its natural element, the earth or sea salt, and let it stand for awhile.  The salt will absorb and transform the negative elements.

WATER: Put your pendulum in a bowl of crystal energized water, visualize love flowing and replacing any obstacle, removing old emotional links.

AIR: Hold your pendulum over smoldering frankincense resin or smudge to clean up its energy fiend and purify it.

FIRE: Put your pendulum in a pyramid and expose it to the sun for a few hours. It will be energized with the highest vibrations.  If you don’t have a pyramid, don’t worry. Simply place it in a bowl or on a dish in the sun.

Gurus tell us that just as radios pick up information from unseen radio waves, the pendulum is a powerful antenna that receives information from the vibrations and energy waves emitted by people, places, thoughts and things.

Noted physicist, Albert Einstein, was known to perform impressive feats with such dowsing tools.  He believed that it had to do with electromagnetism: just as birds migrate following the earth’s magnetic field, dowsers react to energies that are unseen and still not fully understood. 


Take your pendulum between your thumb and your index finger.  The shorter you hold it, the faster your pendulum will react. Keep your elbow on the table and relax.

Double check your pendulum signal with some questions.  Ask your pendulum to say Yes and then No, and observe the movement it will make.

It’s easy to get working with a pendulum chart or mat. It offers simple Yes or No answers, as well as other useful options such as Ask Again or Will Not/Can’t/Don’t Want to Answer.  Sometimes, we are not ready to receive information because we wouldn’t be able to cope with it or one of our questions needs to be reformulated. For example, you may ask “should I do it now?” and the pendulum may signal the Ask Again (or Rephrase) axis, but if you ask, “should I do it before lunch?” you may get a Yes or No signal.

Before you start, clear your mind of concerns or worries. Take a minute to invite your Guides and Angels. Light and Love are the best shields against anything unwanted. Intentions are everything when working with spiritual tools. If you are inclined, many repeat a prayer 3 times before starting to work with the pendulum, such as this one:

“May I have a heart as pure as a crystal, an intellect as bright as the sun, a soul as vast as the Universe, a spirit as powerful as God, and united with God.”

There are many fun ways to work with pendulums, as in the Yes/No example.  But there are also various charts:

A CHAKRA chart can tell you about your physical or emotional imbalances, and which energy center you should focus on working with.

An ASTROLOGY chart can have many possibilities. It can represent different phases of life, a time of year, or can give you information on recommended relationships.

A NUMBER chart can give you your lucky number, dates, expected temperature, and sometimes people consult with them based on quantities of things (i.e. recommend a quantity of product to buy).

The more you work with a pendulum, the more comfortable you will get with it, and want to explore all the many ways it can benefit you. Soon, your pendulum will become a powerful tool for your decision making and self-awareness.

Want to know a secret? Ok, maybe two secrets.

Society plays tricks with our brains. When you play along (which is easy to do), you end up thinking that being “busy” is what we’re supposed to be, that it’s a good thing. (Even a status symbol!) But guess what? We are human BEINGS, not human DOINGS.

In fact, according to the NY Times, you’re probably not even doing it on purpose. “At some point, the standard answer to “how are you” changed from “fine, thanks” to “busy!” And as a result, we’ve developed a mindset that pushing ourselves to the point of exhaustion is normal. Until we crash and burn.

By not allowing ourselves to simply “be,” we can never truly know who we are. If you’re running around listening to everyone else and taking care of everyone else, but you ignore your own needs and your own voice, chances are you are running on empty — stuck in The Busy Trap — and not really accomplishing very much.  Worse, you are risking your own well-being.

I know this drill so well, because it was me. But I conquered my “chaotic, crazy-busy” whirlwind of a life with a simple  secret weapon: SELF-CARE.

People often wonder why self-care is so important, and mistakenly think they will come off as a slacker. But it couldn’t be farther from the truth, and is a vital step to taking charge of your own wellbeing.

First, for me, it starts with GRATITUDE and BREATHING! Literally, just taking a moment to breathe deeply, and think about 3 things I’m grateful for tricks my brain, and slows down life, allowing me to be present, and in control. Things are back in focus.

Next, I love playing the self-care game way more than the crazy-busy game. So depending on what’s going on, I may grab a cup of herbal tea and light some candles, or feel the need to soak for 20 minutes in a warm bath at the end of the day.  Or! I may even start my day with an energizing bath if I feel more fatigued than usual. Self-care is also time spent with friends, or walking in the park. It’s whatever nourishes you — mentally, physically, spiritually, and emotionally. Lately, I love flipping through magazines — there is something about the thick, beautiful Fall issues and the inspiration in them that is fun.  For sure, I’m a fan of anything that requires me to slow down, and take a digital detox.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a mom with several creative passions and businesses, someone who literally lives outside of their comfort zone every single day.  Like everyone, I have hard days. But the difference now is I don’t let any of it define me, or control me. And I want to make it easier for people everywhere to experience how good, fun and healthy self-care can be.

Let’s face it. Even on the best days, we all experience mental exhaustion because of the chaotic nature of what’s going on in the world. And now, more than ever, we need to arm ourselves with holistic tools to feed our bodies, our skin, our mind, in ways that help us completely re-charge and renew our spirit. The 6 Dimensions of Wellness

Fall in love with taking care of yourself.

Everyday wellness. One thing we can all probably agree on is that everyone wants to be well. After all, being well means that life is in full color, and anything is possible, right?

The challenge is how to achieve your optimal well SELF.  At times, this concept can seem overwhelming because we let ourselves, perhaps unintentionally, get overwhelmed. It can become a vicious cycle leaving you depleted, questioning your own self-worth, lapsing into bad habits and definitely not feeling your best.  Do you struggle with how to break this cycle? Or wonder, how can it be done easily and quickly so you can happily get on with your life? Before we can answer these questions, let’s look at what wellness actually means.

The definition of wellness, long used by the National Wellness Institute, is consistent with the following tenets which encompass a shared agreement among health and wellness leaders around the world:

  • Wellness is a conscious, self-directed and evolving process of achieving full potential;
  • Wellness is multidimensional and holistic, encompassing lifestyle, mental and spiritual well-being, and the environment;
  • Wellness is positive and affirming.

Therefore, NWI states: Wellness is an active process through which people become aware of, and make choices toward, a more successful existence.

In fact, Dr. Bill Hettler, co-founder of the National Wellness Institute, is credited for developing the interdependent holistic model, The Six Dimensions of Wellness, and when applied “a person becomes aware of the interconnectedness of each dimension and how they contribute to healthy living.”

This holistic model explains:

  • How a person contributes to their environment and community, and how to build better living spaces and social networks;
  • The enrichment of life through work, and its interconnectedness to living and playing;
  • The development of belief systems, values, and creating a world-view;
  • The benefits of regular physical activity, healthy eating habits, strength and vitality as well as personal responsibility, self-care and when to seek medical attention;
  • Self-esteem, self-control, and determination as a sense of direction;
  • Creative and stimulating mental activities, and sharing your gifts with others.

I found this model to be helpful as a way for me to look at and understand my own wellness journey. But even more profound, it’s even more clarifying for me in terms of our mission for Salty Bath. At the core of this mission is a passion to help people have what they need to practice self-care and live to their full-potential. It developed out of my own life experiences and learning first-hand how to break the cycle of feeling depleted and overwhelmed. I needed to stop getting in my own way — but I also wanted something that didn’t eat up a lot of time and money.

Self-care became my secret weapon for winning at life… and through that journey came a discovery of not only my optimal wellness, but a much deeper connection with myself and a “successful existence” — something I had never experienced before. The word existence is key here and it’s dimensional. This process, as we can see, is all about the choices we make toward a holistic awareness around healthy living. It’s so much more than diet and exercise, and financial success or well-being. But you open yourself up to experience more abundance and joy in every aspect of your life when you are operating with this type of awareness and connectedness – that is for sure.

So here is something to think about. By being more intentional, you get out of any rut you find yourself in.  You can actually harness your own energy in a more positive way as it relates to any aspect of your life.

This was a profound discovery for me, and it happened with the simple act of Intentional Bathing.  My showers were transactional and based on good hygiene. But my baths were intentional mindful moments with myself.  Often, I went into the tub feeling stressed, anxious, tired, tense and sore. So I started concocting a transition ritual for myself, one that took me out of my head and into stillness.  It was a full sensory experience: the hot water with mineral salts (touch); essential oils (smell), candles and healing crystals (sight); meditative music (sound/hearing); and warm tea (taste). I also put my hands over my heart and felt my own heartbeat. I focused on the beats as I breathed deeply and slowly. After these 20 minute sessions with myself, I was a different person from the one who entered the tub. I was calmer. The stress and tension were gone. My body had softened, and I was relaxed without pain. My energy was more grounded, and my head was clear. I imagine it’s the closest thing to feeling like a marshmallow!

Being connected to myself this way enabled me to be of much better service to everyone around me, but it also made me realize that it just takes the smallest of actions to effect change for the better. One that has a rippling effect, sending higher, positive vibrations out into the world. It inspired to me to figure out how to help more people this way.

Who doesn’t love going to a spa? It’s relaxing, rejuvenating and helps us recharge from our typically busy and responsibility-filled lives. Everything about a spa visit is designed to help you unplug from the real world – time spent enjoying pampering treatments such as a massage or a facial, and even long hot soaks or other therapeutic sessions to help you decompress. Unfortunately, a spa isn’t always the most affordable luxury. For many of us, we only get to go a handful of times in our lives, even though most of us could really use it on the regular! Do a mask: Facial masks are one of the best skincare products to have on hand for times when you need an excuse to relax and recharge. You can even do a mask while you multitask around your house, but if you can, we recommend trying to really give yourself a break- even if it’s only twenty minutes. I like to time my spa-at-home experience to night.  That way, my commitments for the day are done, and I can wash away all the energy I collected, slip into something cozy afterwards, and really unwind.  Or even better, drift off to a great night’s sleep!
